Paramount Pictures 1944 film of the supernatural,"The Uninvited",is probably the finest ghost story ever made.It is also famous for two other reasons.One is it introduced Paramount film composer Victor Young's hauntingly lovely serenade,"Stella by Starlight",to movie audiences.The second reason is that it also introduced movie goers to Gail Russell in her first starring role.This film made her an over night sensation and catapulted her to fame and cinema immortality.Yet it was a blessing with a curse.Ironically,it was during filming of "The Uninvited"that Gail became addicted to alcohol,that eventually fatal elixir she sought to calm her fragile psyche and cure her ever present stage fright.It was an addiction that inevitably led to an early death at the young age of 36.Nevertheless,"The Uninvited"is a great film.Directed by Lewis Allen,cinematography by Charles Lang Jr.,who was nominated for an Academy Award,and a memorable music score by Victor Young.Headed by a great cast-Ray Milland,Ruth Hussey,Donald Crisp,Cornelia Otis Skinner,and introducing Gail Russell.My favorite scene from the film is where Gail,as Stella Meredith,is seen staring out the window at the approaching dawn,and as the camera zooms in on her face,there is such a look of wonder,happiness,and gratitude.She says"I wanted to see the Dawn,with her.'Her?' "Don't you know who it is in your house? It's my Mother! 'You saw her?' "I didn't see her,but when I awoke,she was in the room!It was full of her scent.I ...
